This course will provide you with increased confidence and greater ability to review and assess your organisation's financial health. We will look at basic financial tools to help you to monitor resources, make better decisions for your organisation and communicate with financial professionals including your treasurer, finance officer or accountant.


By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • identify the core financial documents that a charity must publish
  • understand the way accounts are presented
  • explore the key reporting areas of financial management and control
  • read management accounts
  • understand the role and responsibilities of a treasurer and the role of all trustees in relation to the finances of the charity.

Who should attend?

Those who feel they would benefit from a better understanding of their charity’s finances and accounts. This course is suitable for people who have little or no knowledge of finance.

Who runs it?

Howard Exton Smith has over 20 years' experience as a consultant, facilitator and coach specialising in personal and organisational development, governance and performance improvement.

Howard likes to make his sessions as practical as possible so he tries to give participants exercises to bring out certain issues rather than just tell them. And, he comes from a background in general management and as a former chair and trustee, he likes to think that he has been in your shoes and seeks to demystify the language, build your confidence and encourage you to form good, cooperative relationships with your finance people.


The training will run from 09.30 until 16.30.
