This course will provide you with increased confidence and greater ability to review and assess your organisation's financial health. We will look at basic financial tools to help you to monitor resources, make better decisions for your organisation and communicate with financial professionals including your treasurer, finance officer or accountant.


By the end of this course you will be able to: 

  • demystify the language of finance 
  • identify the core financial documents that a charity must publish
  • explore the key reporting areas of financial management and control
  • increase skills and confidence in charity financial management 
  • understand the role and responsibilities of a treasurer and the role of all trustees in relation to the finances of the charity.


Those who feel they would benefit from a better understanding of their charity’s finances and accounts. This course is suitable for people who have little or no knowledge of charity finance.

This course is intended for leadership development purposes and should not be used as a substitute for professional financial advice.


Howard Exton Smith has over 20 years' experience as a consultant, facilitator and coach specialising in personal and organisational development, governance and performance improvement.

Howard likes to make his sessions as practical as possible so he tries to give participants exercises to bring out certain issues rather than just tell them. And he comes from a background in general management and as a former chair and trustee, he likes to think that he has been in your shoes and seeks to demystify the language, build your confidence and encourage you to form good, cooperative relationships with your finance team. 


This training will take place on Zoom. We will send out the Zoom link with the joining instructions before the session. 

The training will run from 09.45 until 15.30 with short breaks and a longer lunch break.
